Full on Q&A with Liverpool's Raw City

Raw City

Firstly who are Raw City?

(Philly Moore, Raw City front man)...Well Raw City is four lads from the home of the Ritzy, Bromborough, and we jam in Liverpool city centre. We consist of me (vocals and rhythm) Craig Ebbrell who’s on the Bass, Jack Turner who’s on the guitar,,and then there's Davey boy Keenan our drummer... who we found in a doughnut factory.

Blues / garage / indie / punk… how would you describe the Raw City sound?

Well at first we didn’t really know what we were going to sound like or even what we wanted to sound like. It wasn’t until we had played for a bit that the music kind of took its own sound without us trying to achieve it really. It defo has bouncy, good time feel about it which gives it a quintessential Rock’n’roll vibe. At the same time it’s very primal and raw with no frills so that kind of gives it a lo-fi garage punk band sound, so yeah let’s say its garage Rock’n’roll for now.

So you’ve got a EP going by the title ‘It’s about time’ what’s it about and how can people get hold of it?

Well it basically means it’s about time we did this, I’ve had these tunes knocking around for a while and have always played them acoustically at parties and other such gatherings on my travels. Then one day when me and Craig were having a pint and he said let’s get the ball rolling and try banging these tunes out with a proper band and the rest is history really, so yeah “it’s about time” we got off our arses and went for this proper.People can check it out at www.rawcity.bandcamp.com

Have you got a record deal or you doing it your own way?

On our own for now, we plan to play the toilet scene for a bit and see how we get on, if people are loving the tunes then we will keep avin it but we’re in no really hurry for a label. All that malarkey about getting signed can depress some bands and we can’t be arsed with that - we just want to have a bit of fun first and make people move.

So The Loud hail from in and around Liverpool, do you feel a weight of expectation of been in a band from the North West and especially Liverpool with all that has gone before musically?

Yeah The Loud, along with a crowd of other Merseyside bands, are great and I suppose we are aware of the local talent. If anything that simply drives us more.

What’s it like playing live in your home city? What can we expect from Raw City live?

From a Raw City gig people should expect a great time, boss tunes, nostalgia, a sore head and an itchy dick.

Where can we find Raw City website / facebook / myspace page and what’s on there? How important do you think stuff like facebook is to new / unsigned bands?

I think it is important for bands to get recognized but I think bands can over do it and start to become a pain in the arse by consistently going at it and ramming it down peoples throat, I mean you don’t need twenty different MySpace’s and that. We basically have a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/rawcity) which is so are friends can know what’s going on regarding gigs and we have a bandcamp thing set up (www.rawcity.bandcamp.com) so they can hear our tunes - that’s all you need i think.

And some people say the internet is a good thing. Some people say the internet is a bad thing….. What do you say?

Yeah like I said I think it’s good, it’s the future and it’s so big now that it’s hard to ignore, the only thing I don’t like is that people mainly listen to tunes now through their laptop speakers which is shite, it takes away the thickness and body of songs and leaves you with a thin shoddy sound. Music is about feelin’ and those shitty computer speakers are not for the job.

You all look like stylish kind of lads, how important do you think image is in a band / in the music game?

Obviously it is important to have an image because it sells and we always try to scrub up well, there's no point trying to make good music when you look like an eye sore. It’s nice to look nice and if you look nice the birds look twice.

What song would get you up dancing every time & why?

Ohhh hard one that, there’s lots to be honest, once I’ve had a bevy anything with a beat normally gets me throwing the shapes.

What was the last song you listened to and was it any good?

Errmm I heard Smokey Robinson in work today on the radio, Tracks of my tears it was and it’s my favourite Motown song.

Can you list your five favourite songs of all time and if so what are they?

Of the top of my head errrm give us a sec....

Bob Dylan “Subterranean homesick blues”

The Who “Baba O’rielly”

Danny Evans “Alice what you doing?”

The La’s “Timeless melody”

Millencolin “No Cigar”

These songs are just the pick of today!

Vinyl, Cd or download?

Most probably cd, why? Because I don’t have a record player and because I’m shit on computers.

Where’s your favourite place in the world and what does it say about you?

Ibiza – I did a season there in 2009. I love the people, the vibe, the sun and music, and I’m not gonna lie... because I love getting twisted off the gear.

On a Liverpool theme… John, Paul, George or Ringo? Who would you be & why?

Pete Best

Also The La’s… genius or lazy shite?

Lazy Genius

If you had to go to confession tomorrow what would you have to confess to and do you regret doing it!

I always honk my wages on a Friday night and then I’m skint for the rest of the week, and yeah I do regret it but only until the next Friday.
